Getting Started

How much does it cost to receive submissions through ExpressO?

Nothing. ExpressO is a free service to law reviews. Authors and/or their institutions pay ExpressO to deliver manuscripts to you!

How can our law review start using ExpressO?

Not yet listed on ExpressO? Feel free to sign up to receive author submissions by filling out sign-up form. Already have an account? You can access your account through your law review’s submission address. If you’re not receiving submissions, your review may be on hold status. Remove your law review from hold by accessing your account Configuration page.

If you need to update your law review’s setup information, including submission address, law review title, and subject categories, complete our sign up/change form. If you need any assistance accessing your review’s account, please contact us at expresso-support@bepress.com.

How do we advertise to authors?

ExpressO allows authors to browse and select from over 750 law reviews. Law review information is limited to title and selected subject category, though we can add a short annotation next to your review title. For example, “Accepting articles for online feature“.

We also message authors throughout the year with information on features, and like to highlight new or recently reopened law reviews. If you’re interested in adding an annotation, or would like to be featured on our author mailers, please contact us at expresso-support@bepress.com.

Also, don’t forget to add the ExpressO button to your law review’s website! The ExpressO button is link-enabled, and directs visitors to the ExpressO submit form.

Receiving Submissions

How are ExpressO submissions delivered?

Your ExpressO account includes with a free online submission management system. Editorial tools and integrated features are included to help editors easily manage articles. Please see our ExpressO Guide for Law Review Editors for more information.

As a courtesy, we also notify you via email of new submissions sent to your review. These email notifications provide a quick link to the submission through your review’s ExpressO account. If you wish, you can adjust your notification setting to include the submission documents as email attachments via your Configuration page.

Why do I get an error when I click on the link in the submission notification?

The link provided in the new submission notification directs you to your review’s online account. You must be logged onto ExpressO under the submission address, or an account included on the Editors list. If you need any assistance accessing your review’s account, please contact us at expresso-support@bepress.com.

Can multiple editors access my review's ExpressO account?

We recommend law reviews include all applicable editors on their Editors list to allow users can log on through their own accounts to view and manage submissions. Add editors via the Editor link through the Configuration page. Editor privileges and notifications can be managed here as well.

Can I close my law review to student submissions?

If your review does not accept student submissions, please update your account profile via our sign up/change form. Once we’re informed, we add the annotation “Closed to students” next to your review title, and students submitting under an ExpressO Institutional Student Account will be unable to select your law review for submission.

Managing Submissions

I'm logged in. How do I access and view submissions?

Once logged in, on your My Account page, you should see at least four options (depending on privileges set), including: Upload, Configuration, Manage Submissions, and Mailing List. Access submissions by clicking on the Manage Submissions link.

To access submission documents, click on the Manuscript ID or Article Title to view the Submission Details page. The links to download the documents and most of the editorial tools you will need to manage your submissions are available on this page.

Why can't I see any articles on the Manage Submissions page?

By default, when you access your Manage Submissions page, you will see all submissions assigned to the account you’re logged onto. This means that if you’re logged on under your review’s submission address, you’ll likely see all submissions. If you have been added to your review’s editor list, you will see all articles assigned to you specifically. To view and access all submissions, simply adjust the search filter and change Assigned to to All Editors and click the blue Filter button. You can also adjust the search filters to expand the scope to include submissions that are assigned to all editors, or make further refinements as needed.

All new submissions to your law review are automatically assigned to the default account indicated on the set-up form. If you wish to change which account is auto-assigned new submissions (only one account), you can adjust editor account privileges. Specifically, on your Configuration page, click the Editors link on the left side bar to access the Editor Management page. Under Submissions and Review, check mark the box next to Is assigned submissions by default. You can also adjust other access privileges for other editors.

If you have a dedicated intake editor, responsible for assigning all articles to additional editors, we recommend that the intake editor use the default account to log in and manage submissions.

Can I restrict account privileges for individual editors?

You can adjust specific access privileges for others on your editors list by accessing the Editor Management page via Configuration>Editors. For example, you can restrict the ability to Upload, Register Decisions, and access your Mailing List feature. We recommend adding all applicable editors to your editors list so they can access using their own accounts.

Can we upload submissions we receive outside of ExpressO?

To upload and manage submissions you receive outside of ExpressO, log in to your law review, and use the Upload link, shown on your My Account page. You must complete all of the required submission metadata: author information (email address in the Email field with no quotation marks or brackets), article title, and subject categories. The categories must be listed in the Selected box before moving on to the next step of the upload process. Once you upload to your account, you can manage as normal; however, if you wish to use the Register Decision feature, you will accept on behalf of the author.

I accidentally rejected a submission. Can this be undone?

If you accidentally reject an article, we can revert it back to pending status. Contact us at expresso-support@bepress.com and provide the manuscript ID number and article title.

Can I revise a submission on behalf of an author?

The Revise Submission tool, available on the Submission Details page, allows you to revise any part of the submission metadata, and even upload a new version of the manuscript. Once you revise a submission, these changes will only be visible to you, and not to the author.

Why are we receiving emails from authors requesting offer confirmation?

In addition to direct contact, we encourage editors to make their offers through ExpressO. When you use the Register Decision tool to send authors an offer to publish, the offer is reflected on your Manage Submissions page, and simultaneously appears as a green Accept button in the author’s ExpressO account. This integration makes it easy for authors to track and accept offers, as well as make expedite requests based on those offers.

When an author accepts an offer through their ExpressO account, by clicking on the green Accept button, it triggers a change to the sub-status of the submission to Selected for Publication, and then automatically withdraws the submission from all other reviews’ consideration.

How do Expedite Preferences work?

While you will receive all expedite requests that are sent to your review, we created special tools to help you prioritize expedite requests. Based on specific criteria you set, see at a glance which requests meet your preferences. To learn more or get started using these tools, see the ExpressO Guide for Law Review Editors.

How do I change my star rating for an article?

Access the Editor Comments and Evaluations via the Submissions Details page of any article, and select a new rating or clear out your entry by clicking on the red clear rating symbol. The average rating will automatically update and reflect on your Manage Submissions page.

Can authors or other law reviews see our comments or ratings?

Only you and your fellow editors can view and access your law review’s ExpressO account (if provided access via your editors list). Authors can only see what information you send them, including any correspondence you generate, such as Register Decision or the Email Authors features.

Post Submission Selection

Our volume is full. How do we place our review on hold?

Close your review from receiving submissions by accessing the Configuration page of your law review. Check mark the box next to Hold Submissions and enter a short note about your closure in the Reason for Hold field. We recommend that you enter an anticipated date of reopening if possible to keep authors informed.

How do we track submissions we've selected for publication?

You can move submissions that you have selected for publication from your Not Yet Published, or pending queue to Published, so only those articles that still require a decision will appear. Marking articles as Published not only helps you keep track of articles you’ve selected, but also helps you keep your Manage Submissions queue up-to-date.

Before marking an article Published (via the Submission Details page), we recommend you first use the Register Decision tool to send the author an Offer to Publish. This integrated feature allows authors to see the offer through their own ExpressO account, and easily accept with a click of a button.

How do we move old submissions out of our pending queue?

At then end of the submission season, after your volume is full and you’re no longer accepting submissions, use the Archive tool to clear out the entire Not Yet Published, or Pending queue. We recommend only using this feature after you have made your article selections and you have marked your selected articles as Published.
