When the Berkeley Electronic Press launched its first journals in December 2000, we set out to solve three problems that plague academic journal publishing: speed, access, and cost. Our journals offer fast and high-quality peer review, they allow wide dissemination and access, and we offer them at prices that libraries can easily afford.
What sets bepress journals apart?
Top peer-reviewed research
All bepress journals are rigorously edited and peer-reviewed by some of the world's best-known and most widely-published scholars, from prestigious universities (Princeton, Columbia, London School of Economics, Cal Tech), research centers (RAND, Jackson Laboratory), and government agencies (Federal Reserve Bank, EPA, Department of Homeland Security). Editors include two Nobel Prize winners in economics: Joseph Stiglitz (The Economists' Voice) and Edmund Phelps (Capitalism and Society).
Fast publication
The evidence to date is clear - we have largely eliminated the delays in publication resulting from review and publication queues. Almost all submissions receive decisions in 10 weeks or less. In 2007, in fact, the average submission received a decision in 43 days (six weeks), and, if accepted, was published 24 days later, for a total submission-to-publication time of nine weeks. As a result, bepress journals provide the fastest access to new research in exploding fields.
Generous guest access
The Berkeley Electronic Press has pioneered an innovative guest access policy that offers a middle ground between free open access and fee-based subscription access. Scholars can access the full text of all articles at no charge even if their institution does not subscribe. We only ask that they fill out a short form that allows us to inform their library of their interest.
Sustainable price
Run by professors working to solve the scholarly communication crisis, bepress is committed to sustainable library-friendly pricing and policies. None of our journals cost more than $500, and we do not raise the price of journals from year to year. Find out more about prices and subscriptions and how our prices compare to our competitors’.
Mission-driven acquisitions
We add new journals to our collection judiciously, and keep the collection of all bepress journals at a very high quality across the board—journals whose editors are among the leading figures in their field, and whose intellectual profile stands out from comparable existing journals. We devote significant resources to help new journals reach their potential. In particular, we contribute value to the academic landscape by publishing journals in emerging fields and those that are underserved by other major publishers; journals in fields that benefit from significantly faster publication time; journals in fields that are notoriously overpriced; and general-interest and practitioner journals.
Indexing and archiving
The bepress journals have received further validation by virtue of their inclusion in EconLit, MEDLINE, Thomson/ISI’s Web of Science, Westlaw, and other prominent indexing and abstracting services. Our journals are also fully archived according to leading industry standards, in Portico and LOCKSS.

Impact and audience
As word of the bepress model has spread, interest in academia and beyond has grown significantly. Readership has grown to over one million professors, researchers, and practitioners worldwide. Scholars download bepress articles over 1,000 times per day, and over 450,000 receive regular email alerts of new content.
Nearly 3,000 institutions now subscribe to our journals, both nationally and internationally. Among them you will find nearly all ARL libraries, the top North American law schools, major consortia in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and China, and the entire German national library system. Plus, over 400 institutions around the world subscribe to the collection of all bepress journals.
Readership and submissions have grown dramatically, and we have steadily added new journals to our collection:
