Policies for International Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship

Submitted articles:

Each submitted article is assigned to an editor. The editor oversees the editorial process and decides if the submission is:

  • Accepted
  • Tentatively accepted pending revision (minor revision)
  • Returned for revision to be followed by a second review (major revision)
  • Rejected

The editorial decision is based on up to 3 peer reviews of the submission. Only published authors will be asked to be reviewers. The editor may decline forwarding a manuscript for review if it does not meet the aims and scope of the journal or if it is unsatisfactory in content or form.

A decision is guaranteed within 10 weeks.

Author Responsibilities for Submission of Cover Letter and Article:

  • For the manuscript to be reviewed, a cover letter to the editor is required, which should include the following statement: The manuscript entitled [insert title], or a substantially similar version of it, is not under consideration by another journal, nor has not it been accepted or published elsewhere.
  • Indicate in your cover letter whether the manuscript is research-based or expository. For research articles, provide a statement specifying that the study was approved by the institutional ethics review board.
  • Indicate in your cover letter how the manuscript contributes to knowledge development in nursing education.

Author Responsibilities for Acceptance of an Article:

  • Send an electronic version of the article that conforms to the bepress format.
  • Agree to the Publication Agreement. If the author agrees, the article will be published shortly after receipt of the final electronic version. If the author does not agree, the article will be withdrawn.
  • Provide necessary permissions for the use of copyrighted materials
  • For research articles, provide a statement specifying that the study was approved by the institutional ethics review board.

Author Responsibilities for Revision and Resubmission of Article:

The author decides if the article will be revised and resubmitted or withdrawn. The notice of intent to resubmit is required by the editor within 30 days of receiving the request. The article cannot be submitted to another journal (electronic or print) during this 30-day period. Articles must be resubmitted within 4 months of receiving the publication decision.

Editorial Responsibility:

The editors are committed to ensuring the high quality of published manuscripts. Accordingly, manuscripts will be edited for syntax, spelling, punctuation, clarity, and grammar when necessary. Substantive changes will be verified with the corresponding author.

Professional Obligation

Submission of an article for review implies agreement to review 2 submissions by other authors, if requested by the editors. Fulfilment of this professional obligation is a form of social contract that ensures continuation of IJNES standards.

Policy on Prompt Reviews

The International Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship promises an editorial decision within 10 weeks of receipt of a submission. To ensure that this timeline is achieved, reviewers should:

  • Submit the review within 21 days of agreement to review. The reviewer will be reminded via email of the review deadline.
  • Submit a review of sufficient quality. The editor who requested the review will decide whether the review is of sufficient quality.

Caveats:

The 10-week timeframe begins only after the complete submission is ready for review in an acceptable format. There are situations when it may not be possible to satisfy the 10-week turnaround from initial submission to an editorial decision. Such situations could include:

  • Submission not completed by the author.
  • Submission not provided in a suitable electronic format or an Adobe PDF file of sufficient quality for reviewers to review
  • Unexpected delay in the completion of reviews

Policy on Submissions by Editors

If manuscripts are submitted by the editors, either jointly or singly, the editors will withdraw from all editorial responsibilities for these submissions. A member of the editorial board will be asked to manage the review process off-line. The editorial board member who oversees the review process will make the decision about whether to publish the article.

Copyright and Open Access Permissions

As further described in our submission agreement, in consideration for publication of the article, the authors assign to The Berkeley Electronic Press all copyright in the article, subject to the expansive personal-use exceptions described below.
