From Oakland, Lessons for France: A Review of la Couleur du pouvoir

John Hanley, University of California, Berkeley

Abstract

Oakland, California does not lend itself to simple descriptions, and it is a considerable accomplishment that Frédérick Douzet's excellent book achieves an understanding of this diverse polity. Separately analyzing the city's neighborhoods and ethnic groups, then looking at their interactions and resulting public policy, this work makes an important contribution to the study of urban politics.
