Aims & Scope

California Journal of Politics and Policy is an online journal of original scholarship, innovative research, and serious commentary and analysis regarding all aspects of California state and local government, electoral politics, and policy formation and implementation. Along with an intense focus on topics related directly to California, the journal explores national and international issues through the lens of the California experience. We publish comparative work that contrasts California with national and global trends and attempts to identify and evaluate California’s unique role as a bellwether in policy and political developments. Our goal is to relate California to national and international developments wherever possible.

Edited by leading experts at the University of California and other academic institutions, California Journal of Politics and Policy establishes a network of scholars, practitioners, journalists, policymakers, and officeholders who bring their distinctive perspectives to bear on this distinctive state, and on politics and policy more broadly.

Submissions

The journal welcomes submissions of academic articles, as well as general interest articles, essays, book reviews and commentary. The journal is divided into three sections: Research Articles, Commentary, and Book Reviews.

Research Articles are peer-reviewed articles that might appear in traditional academic journals. They address California politics or policy issues on any topic relevant to California concerns.

Commentary includes analytical essays designed to bring fresh perspective and thinking to California issues. These essays may relate to articles in the Research Articles section, or they might address separate topics of interest to readers. Commentary pieces are closely edited but not peer-reviewed, and address a broader audience than might be reached by traditional academic journals.

Book Reviews include reviews of new books on California politics and policy from academic and non-academic publishers.
